What target folder should I install my application to that will never require uac elevation?

I have an app and I am working on the installer for it. Assuming that I want the installation to not require elevation and I want the application itself to never require elevation and I want the updater for the application (which is build in) to never require elevation where should I install the application to?

Caveats:

  1. This application is not signed.
  2. I am okay if each user has to install it separately under their profile.
  3. Can I use the registry in the install and accomplish the same goal?
  4. The only writes it makes are to setttings/configuration files.
  5. .NET 4 app.

How can I get a Microsoft Access combobox to behave like a listbox

With a listbox when you click a letter it takes you to the first match for that letter. When you click that letter again it takes you to the second match for that letter and so on. Is there a way to get a combo box to behave that way?

Comment by Seth Spearman on How can I automate the checkout of an excel spreadsheet from a sharepoint document library, edit the spreadsheet, and check it back in?

I just looked at the VBA object model and notice that the workbook object has a Checkout method. And the description is "Copies the workbook from a server to a local computer for editing"...just what I was looking for. If that works I will post the code into my answer. Seth

How can I automate the checkout of an excel spreadsheet from a sharepoint document library, edit the spreadsheet, and check it back in?

I have a couple of hundred excel spreadsheets that are stored in a SharePoint 2010 document library.

A good many of these spreadsheets have hard coded URLs that need to be updated to new URLs based on some re-structuring of our SharePoint site.

I would like to iterate through all of the spreadsheets, open them and do a search and replace and then write them back into SharePoint.

For the record, I already know how to iterate the excel spreadsheets in SharePoint (creating reference to SPFile) and run the checkout and checking commands.

I am almost very comfortable with doing the OLE Automation of Excel to do the find and replace.

I am struggling with how to bridge the gap between the two. After I grab a reference to a file and check it out, how can I do ole automation on it? Normally I believe that to open a reference to a file I would need a file path but even if I check out with the "use local" option there is not a file created into the file system (and even if there is I am not convinced that it would work to work with the temp file.)

It seems that I should be able to load it from a stream into a VBA Excel Automation object but I am not sure how.

Any thoughts?

What is the best tool to profile a 3rd party production silverlight assembly running under sharepoint?

We are using SharePoint 2010 with a 3rd party vendor to implement some project management functionality. One of the pages that has a silverlight web part is very slow to load the silverlight component. The page itself loads fine but the progress meter for the silverlight web part itself displays for over a minutes for each page load/refresh.

We have worked with the vendor (who has really been fantastic) and they think it is an infrastructure problem and maybe it is.

Our evidence is that our infrastructure is not getting hammered during the load for that silverlight component.

I would like to solve the question once and for all by using a profiler tool to peg the method call(s) that are taking so long.

Here are my questions...

1) CAN you profile the assembly in this case since it is a production 3rd party assembly with no source code or PDB file?
2) What tool would you recommend? We ARE willing to spend a little money to solve this problem but if you can recommend a free tool (or method) to resolve that is a big plu.
3) Can you give a very high-level overview of how to use the tool that you recommend.
4) Can you offer an generic/general advice on how to attack our problem.

Thanks in advance for your help.
